She can Read ! The Miracle of the Twilight Series

2008 June 7

My IPhone started ringing the other day. It was my oldest daughter. I smiled. She is 24 years old and single. I expected the usual update on her weekend at the clubs with her friends, the guys who hit on her, the clothes she bought, the make up she was trying, the movies she just saw , and the usual 20-30 minute run down on her life. It was the call that only a father could enjoy.  I always look forward to hearing from her.

The first thing she said to me was,  ”Hi Dad! I just finished reading this book about Vampires but it is really is about love and I am going to read the second book…”  I had to to look at the caller I.D. again. Yes, this was the phone number of  Theresa.  It sounded like the voice of the young lady, who for as long as I have known her, since the day that she was born, has only been interested in her hair. Later on in her life she expanded her interests to looking at the pictures in Vogue.

Did I hear her say that she actually read a whole book?

I interrupted her and asked, “Terri,  did you just say you read a book?  Like one without pictures?” There was some silence. Then a sigh. “Funny, Dad,” she replied.  Apparently, her sisters and brother were similarly shocked.

She continued, ” I know that I have never been much of a reader ( “never” is an understatement)  but I picked up these books because everybody has been talking about them. I started reading them and the story really grabbed me.  I have to read the whole series.”

You have got to understand.  I got choked up. It was like seeing my daughter take her first steps. It was like seeing her ride her bike without her training wheels for the first time. It was like how Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady must have felt when Eliza Dolittle finally could say ” The Rain in Spain falls mainly in the Plain” correctly.

All the rest of our family loves to read. Terri finally proved she actually had some of our genes. There were no longer doubts about the Milkman any more.

My daughter, my first born, can read and loves it.  It’s a Miracle! God Bless us everyone …even if it took vampires to do it!

The series of books that have made a literary lover out of my girl are known as the Twilight series which are written by Stephenie Meyer.  Her books have become so popular that she  has been referred to as the next J.K. Rowlings.

Although the book centers on a love story surrounding a young High School human girl and a High School  boy ( who is really an immortal) vampire,  it really has themes  that are universal and appealing to the relationship angst experienced by young adults.  It is intelligent and compelling writing.

Here is an excerpt:

“Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ”Be very still,” he whispered, as if I wasn”t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat.” As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because–he’’s a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward’’s sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer’’s writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction.(Ages 12 and up)  Source: Stephanie Meyer’s Amazon.com’s Store
